What’s inside matters.
On the back of a successful showing at the American Rental Association (ARA) exhibition in Las Vegas and United Rentals a few weeks before, the global Perkins rental team, headed up by sales manager Corey Berry, is looking forward to another busy year.
Powernews managed to grab 20 minutes with Corey in the Seguin, Texas office before he headed out of town for a meeting with one of the world’s leading rental houses.
Perkins has been attending ARA for many years now. How did this year’s show compare to previous exhibitions?
ARA is a fantastic show for us and as we’ve become ever more entrenched in the rental industry, the show gains in importance and impact. I enjoy the show every year a little bit more than the last, as the conversations we’re able to have at the event with OEMs and rental houses are so valuable and I personally also love seeing the range of Perkins-powered rental equipment on show, from pumps, compressors and welders to mobile generator sets, mini excavators and aerial work platforms among others.
What were some of the things you were talking about and showing at ARA?
ARA was very focused around our ‘What’s inside matters’ campaign, which hopefully you’re going to be hearing and seeing a lot more of throughout the year. In support of this, on the stand we were showcasing our proven 2.2, 3.6 and hybrid 2.8 litre compact, power-dense platforms supporting rental applications such as small telehandlers and skid steer loaders requiring up to 121 hp. These compact and powerful engines provide excellent performance in power, peak and low-speed torque, fuel consumption and transient response. Reliable and easy to service, the engines are available with a range of configuration options to fit within tight engine bay space allocations, making them ideal solutions for OEMs supplying the rental industry.
Perkins seems to be making a real and sustained impact in the rental industry. What do you put your success down to?
Perkins is a leading engine manufacturer dedicated to delivering world-class products, technology and ‘rental-ready’ support tailored to exceed the rental industry’s expectations.
This has also been helped by the investment we’ve made in our people and the establishment of a dedicated rental team, supported by a world-class distribution network that works very hard to set the standard for dependable power solutions and customised support to meet our customers’ needs.
We have also focused on meeting the needs of rental companies, which sounds obvious, but it’s not something everyone does. Alongside providing a complete range of engine sizes and state-of-the-art diesel engine technology, we have developed programmes specifically aimed at helping rental companies maximise their uptime, expedite the return-to-ready process, provide a clear line of communication for support and instil confidence in rental operators when using a machine powered by Perkins.
How does the rental industry fit into Perkins’ global growth strategy?
The rental industry is crucial to our growth strategy. Rental companies are significant users of diesel-powered equipment, and we are dedicated to what’s important — providing quality products, responsive support and dedication to the industry. By prioritising the rental industry and supporting rental companies, we are committed to adding significant value to an OEM’s machine when powered by a Perkins engine.
I feel others, outside of our business, are also recognising our genuine commitment to the industry. A recent example of this is our delight to recently host the European Rental Association (ERA) Technical Committee Annual meeting, which was held at our Peterborough, UK, facility. I was there for the meeting, as were my team, which saw us host 50 representatives from major rental companies, OEMs, and suppliers to the European rental industry.
Perkins has been a long standing and proactive member of the ERA and we were very proud to be selected as the host for the Technical Committee to assemble and review progress on the key topic of ‘energy transition in rental’, during which members of our own advanced power team presented at the meeting. The ERA leadership recognised the event as one of the largest assembled Technical Committee meetings outside of their normal convention and were delighted at the levels of engagement and participation.
I imagine you have to do this a lot Corey, but what’s your elevator pitch to a rental store about why they should have Perkins-powered equipment in their fleet?
Diesel engines have come a long way from how they were in the past. Gone are the days of simpler mechanical engines that needed fuel, air and compression, in order to run. Today, they are electronically controlled with complex aftertreatment systems. This has changed how we rent and service Stage V/Tier 4 Final-powered rental equipment.
We never want a rental operator needing support for an engine in a machine that should be on rent. Having a solid relationship with the engine manufacturer is more crucial than ever. Collaborating with Perkins provides numerous benefits, including expert support, cutting-edge technology, reliability, customised solutions and reduced downtime.
When it comes to powering a rental fleet, what’s inside truly matters. By selecting Perkins engines for its rental fleet, the rental store is making a confident investment in a relationship that will drive their rental business forward.
Thanks for your time, Corey. Where can people see the team throughout the rest of the year.
We’ll be at the ERA Convention in Dublin, Ireland, from June 4-5 but in the meantime please visit perkins.com/rental and get in touch with us to see how we can help your rental business today, and tomorrow.
