Perkins® 904 Series: pushing the boundaries.
Pushing the boundaries of our diesel platforms to deliver more power from a compact package, Perkins is introducing a new high-power variant into the proven 904 Series range. Powernews got a sneak peek at the new model before its launch at CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2026.
Designed to be class leading, the addition of the new Perkins® 904J-E36TTA packs a powerful punch to a range that’s already powering more than 100,000 machines around the world. The numbers are impressive, as the new model will deliver up to 129 kW (173 hp) and 740 Nm (546 lb ft) at 1500 rpm of class leading power density, all from a compact 3.6 litre engine.
The new high-power 129 kW offering joins a proven engine platform which already includes a 55kW (74 hp) model and a 106 kW (142 hp) power boosted variant, which was introduced in 2025.
Setting the new standard for compact power
The new 129 KW model meets various emissions standards including EU Stage V, U.S. EPA Tier 4 Final and Korea Stage V. It offers end users up to 1000-hour oil and fuel filter intervals and gives customers greater fuel flexibility, as the engine is compatible with B20 biodiesel blends, as well as 100% HVO (hydrotreated vegetable oil), and other sustainable fuels that meet Perkins specified fuel standards as described on perkins.com.1
With fully engine-mounted aftertreatment, which can be customised to suit different machine applications, the engine will perform in extreme cold and at high altitudes. It has been designed for low fluid consumption while delivering the required power across high, medium and low load operations for a range of equipment including:
- Wheel excavators
- Dumper trucks
- Soil compactors
- Backhoe loaders
- Asphalt pavers
- Telehandlers
- Directional drills
Serious power. Same architecture
To achieve up to 129 kW from the proven 3.6 litre platform, engineers have:
- Strengthened the core for increased power, torque and robustness
- Added a twin turbo to support increased power response, and altitude capability
- Resized the engine mounted aftertreatment system to meet high power requirements, ensuring transparent, maintenance free operation in a compact package
- Optimised combustion system delivers maximum power efficiency, while maintaining dependability
- A larger sump has been introduced to support service intervals of up to 1000 hours.
“Original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) want smarter, more efficient power solutions to lower the total cost of ownership for fleet owners and operators,” said Richard Hemmings, vice president and general manager, global sales, marketing, service and parts. “Our product strategy is focused on meeting these requirements, with the launch of the new high-power 129 kW at ConExpo, and more to follow, as we push the boundaries of power.
“The new addition to the proven 904 Series range is built for our customers’ toughest challenges. It has been specifically designed to meet customers’ ongoing needs for higher torque, greater uptime, and lower total operating costs, and offers serious power from a small package, thereby boosting machine capability without increasing the engine size or its complexity.”
