Downsizing

Can we achieve the same or better performance by integrating a smaller engine into our machines? This is the fundamental question that underpins the steady increase in Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) looking at engine downsizing as a way of improving the cost-effectiveness of their operations.

With a growing number of OEMs choosing to install more compact and efficient engines into their machines, the benefits of engine downsizing are becoming more apparent. By integrating a smaller displacement engine, operators can benefit from a reduction in fuel burn and lower greenhouse gas emissions, while higher power density helps to improve the overall efficiency of smaller engines.

At Perkins, we’re constantly evolving our engine range to give OEMs the best possible performance and fuel economy, while meeting the latest emissions standards.

We’ve worked hard to increase the power density of our engines so that operators can achieve the same levels of performance and productivity without significant re-engineering of existing installations.

The 854F-E34TA, for example, is a turbocharged, air-to-air chargecooled, 3.4 litre, 4 cylinder unit capable of producing 86 kW (115 hp). Its high power density, combined with excellent torque, enables machine manufacturers to select this engine where previously they may have used an engine of higher cubic capacity. This downsizing creates more space to package the new aftertreatment unit, resulting in minimal installation impact for our customers.

The potential of engine downsizing

Working with you to achieve results

We adopt a collaborative approach during engine design, working alongside you to understand how you plan to use the engine so that it can be optimised to suit your specific requirements.

And the result? The wider benefits of downsizing include a lower initial acquisition cost, a reduction in the overall package size meaning greater freedom of machine design, and improved sight lines.

One of the most significant potential benefits for downsizing comes with the less demanding emissions standards covering engines rated below 56 kW (75 hp). Downsizing offers both cost and complexity benefits with no requirement for Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) for engines in this class.
