Reducing carbon emissions from construction job sites is a major challenge for the industry. A recent article in Construction Briefing explored multiple approaches that can be used either independently or in combination to help meet the industry’s ambitious goals.

The article said measuring emissions in real time is essential to establishing a baseline, quantifying a goal, and measuring progress toward it. That is best accomplished using software that monitors and reports on individual machine usage.

Eliminating on-site emissions altogether with battery power is another approach. Recent developments in large, stand-alone battery systems that can directly power relatively immobile equipment like cranes can make a significant contribution to on-site emission reduction.

Engaging outside experts to examine and rate a company’s performance also can be useful. Such a review can help an organisation focus on emission reduction goals by making them part of a ‘big picture’ that includes environmental, regulatory and ethical issues.
