Expertise in major components

Perkins engines provide world-class reliability and durability. Sometimes, however, major components need replacing and your local distributor can provide the parts, assistance and expertise necessary to get your engine running again. The term ‘major components’ refers to a group which includes long engines, short engines, cylinder headscylinder blocks and crankshafts. All replacement Perkins parts carry our 12 month warranty.

Your Perkins engine is built to last. However, even the best components will wear over time. And when a major component needs replacing, for whatever reason, the likelihood is you’ll need to seek help from your local Perkins distributor.

Our range of major components covers:

  • Long engine kits: effectively an assembled short engine plus the cylinder head, top and bottom gasket kits, loose gaskets – according to the build of your engine – and head bolts.
  • Cylinder heads: these withstand huge pressures and very high temperatures, while retaining their shape and form, to seal the cylinder block via the head gasket. They are key to controlling air flow in and out of the cylinders and fuel deployment. They also hold the injectors and valves. The cylinder head contains more moving parts than any other part of the engine.
  • Cylinder blocks: these have to be of the highest possible quality so they can perform their vital role as the core of the engine supporting the cylinder heads, timing case, sump and flywheel. They tolerate a variety of temperatures and loads to maintain the stability and lubrication of each individual engine. Each block has oil galleries to maintain lubrication and water galleries to help maintain the engine’s optimum operating temperature.
  • Crankshafts: these convert power generated by the reciprocating up-and-down motion of the pistons in the engine into rotational power for running the connected machinery. The shape of the crankshaft allows connecting rods from the pistons to rotate it thousands of times a minute.

Your distributor will be best placed to advise you on what you might need to buy and what assistance, both practical and in resources, is available for you to complete the changing of a major component.

All genuine Perkins major components come with a 12 month warranty to offer you additional peace of mind.

Con rods

Con rods, or connecting rods to give them their full name, transfer the power generated by the engine’s pistons to the crankshaft, which then operates the machinery it’s connected to. They travel thousands of times a minute and operate under considerable strain.

Crankshaft

Crankshafts are a major component of your engine and allow it to operate at its optimum performance level for a long time. They rarely need replacing and it’s not uncommon for a crankshaft never to be replaced during the life of the engine.

Cylinder block

The cylinder block is one of your engine's central components. It plays a key role in the lubrication, temperature control and stability of the engine and it has to be of the highest quality.

Short blocks

Perkins engines are designed to last for many years but if your engine does fail, it is quick and simple to obtain a replacement short block that will minimise your downtime and get your equipment back up and running swiftly.

Long engines

In the unlikely event that your engine suffers a complete failure, you need a solution fast. While this is rare in most day-to-day operations, it is good to have the knowledge and reassurance that if the worst does occur, there is a solution that you can obtain.

Bearings

The bearings in your engine are relatively small but they play a vital role in keeping everything running smoothly. Worn bearings will seriously affect the operation of your engine, leading to over-heating, excessive noise and wear on other components and, in extreme cases, to the failure of the engine unit itself.
