Perkins new hybrid technologies make their UK debut at Plantworx 2019

Perkins new hybrid technologies are being shown for the first time in the UK at Plantworx 2019.
The hybrid-electric, mechanical and hydraulic power technologies make their UK debut alongside Perkins new 0.5 to 18 litre EU Stage V engine range on stand DA7 at Plantworx, The Showground, Peterborough from June 11-13, 2019.
Perkins is reinforcing its commitment to the construction sector with a major presence at the show, the UK’s largest live working construction event.
“Construction is a critical market for us,” Jaz Gill, Perkins Vice President global sales, marketing, service and parts said. “We power key applications including hydraulic excavators, wheel loaders, backhoe loaders, skid steer loaders, dumpers, telehandlers, dozers, rock crushers and pavers, among many more.
“Our customers appreciate and value the deep expertise we bring to their projects – thanks to our rich heritage over more than 85 years – on how to install and integrate our engines into their machines to maximise performance.”
Proven performance
Perkins is showcasing a range of engines that meet Stage V emission standards:
- The 403J-17T is a compact turbocharged engine delivering 24 percent more power and an impressive 166 Nm of torque – that’s 34 percent more when compared to the previous Stage, enabling users to easily downsize.
- The new Perkins® Syncro 3.6 litre offers power up to 100 kW, excellent peak and low speed torque and economic fuel consumption. Its compact design enables original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to optimise machine layout, while operators will benefit from a quiet engine, after a reduction in noise of 3 decibels at full power.
- The 1204J-E44TA is a 4-cylinder, 4.4-litre capable of multiple power ratings from 82–150 kW with peak torque reaching 825 Nm. The new engine offers significant machine productivity benefits with 15 percent increase in power, 10 percent more torque and 5-10 percent reduction in fuel consumption.
- At the larger end of the Perkins range, the 1706J-E93TA is a 6-cylinder, 9.3 litre engine providing 19 percent more power and improved torque up to 340 kW and 2088 Nm. With a fully configurable options list, a compact and lightweight aftertreatment and no exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) the 1706J offers high performance in a simple and flexible design.
Hybrids and electrification
At Plantworx, Perkins is highlighting three hybrid power solutions through three engines, all at 75 kW. To demonstrate modularity and flexibility, all three hybrid solutions are based on the Perkins® Syncro 2.8 litre.
The first technologies to be shown are:
Hybrid-electric: There are several ways to incorporate the electric motor or generator, with Perkins preferred arrangement delivering excellent fuel saving benefits while moderating the installation impact and minimising the cost impact on the machine. The flexibility of the system provides opportunities for further efficiency and functionality improvements in the whole machine through use of 48-volt electrics.
Hybrid-mechanical: This stores energy in a high-speed flywheel which can be delivered back to the machine. This is particularly useful in hybridising machines that run a cyclic operation and need very intense bursts of additional power. Apart from the very quick energy release, the advantage over hybrid electric is in installation size.
Hybrid-hydraulic: This stores energy in hydraulic accumulators. In some machines this can be the most practical and cost-effective hybrid solution as it easily integrates into existing machine hydraulic systems. Software and integration of machine systems are key to achieving great savings from this technology.
Putting the customer first
As the world becomes ever more digitised Perkins is leading the way with some of the most useful and intuitive digital products on the market.
An array of customer focused products will feature at Plantworx including the Perkins® My Engine App, which bring major benefits to machine users, providing service reminders and important parts and consumables information. By giving owners and operators valuable information on their phone, engines can be kept running effectively with minimum effort.
Perkins is also showing machine users how quick and simple it is to buy genuine parts online, direct from Perkins. The company’s UK online parts shop opened in 2018 and Perkins is now ready to open its latest online shop in Ireland. More details on this will be announced at the show.
