What promises to be one of the largest artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud computing installations in the UK has received outline permission to proceed. As reported in Construction Briefing magazine, the Elsham Tech Park scheme would include 1.5 million square metres of data centre floorspace spread across 15 data halls. The project could provide between 2,600 and 3,600 full-time equivalent construction jobs yearly over the 10 year building programme.
The project would also include an on-site 49.9 MW energy centre, battery storage, distribution system, heating infrastructure and commercial space. The 176 hectare facility would be built at the former RAF Elsham Wolds airfield in Lincolnshire. Also included in the master plan are spaces for greenhouse agriculture that will utilise heat from the data centre servers to support food production.
Construction is projected to begin in 2027 with the first facilities opening in 2029.
