Perkins and the environment – quality and sustainability

We at Perkins aim to be at the forefront of the drive for greater sustainability and environmental responsibility. We’re committed to manufacturing processes that avoid waste, reduce emissions and promote efficiency, and we produce engines that meet stringent emissions standards. Our researchers and development engineers work tirelessly to make high standards even higher.

Throughout the company, we’re on target to meet a series of challenging sustainability targets by 2020. In addition, each of our facilities has its own agreed goals, with practical policies in place to see that they’re met.

We work hard everywhere to minimise waste. Everything possible is reused or recycled, whether it’s waste from a demolished building, or office furniture that’s no longer required being donated to local charities. There are also solar panels to minimise the use of non-renewable fuels, and energy produced by engines in our on-site testing cells helps provide power to the rest of the facility.

Investment in sustainability

Recent investments at our sites around the world has brought energy use and emissions control up to the most stringent modern standards. At more recently built facilities, such as Wuxi in China or Aurangabad in India, sustainability is designed into the fabric of the buildings from the start.

Modern materials provide the highest standards of insulation, sustainably produced materials reduce the carbon footprint of the building, and environmentally sensitive drainage systems purify waste water before it leaves the site.

And at the same time, the manufacturing processes at all our sites concentrate on saving energy, avoiding unnecessary emissions and cutting waste. All over the world, we’re making sustainable manufacture a reality.

“We have set ourselves challenging sustainability targets, and we’re meeting them. Sustainability is an integral part of all that we do.”
Roman Falinski, environmental manager

Flexible policies for transport

Perkins facilities around the world work out the best way to achieve their sustainability targets within their own communities. All our teams are trained to be constantly aware of the need to reduce waste and promote sustainability.

Our facilities also focus on energy-efficient transport for their employees, bringing down the number who drive to work each day, whether by encouraging car-share schemes, providing buses or agreeing discount deals for bicycle purchases with local companies. It’s a win-win policy – by reducing the number of car journeys into the facility, we provide a service to our employees, cut emissions and benefit the environment as well.

Engines that work for you and the environment

We work hard to see that our engines minimise any cost to the environment in the way they’re made as well as the way they run. They meet the toughest environmental standards in the regions where they’re produced, and they’re designed to minimise running costs and fuel consumption.

Elsewhere on our production lines, we’ve set new standards in remanufactured parts and overhaul kits to prolong the working life of our engines.

The highest standards of responsibility

And in all our manufacturing processes, we keep shipping and transportation costs to a minimum.

Perkins has a policy of manufacturing engines in the part of the world where they’ll mostly be used. This enables quicker and more efficient delivery to the customer – and also cuts emissions associated with transportation. In addition, local manufacture means that the facility can use high quality local materials, again reducing transportation.

In the 21st century, the world rightly demands that manufacturing companies observe the most responsible environmental standards. In this, as in everything, we aim to continually exceed expectations.
