Major energy storage milestone in large-scale battery systems

A major energy storage project in South Dakota is offering a glimpse into how industrial facilities are exploring new ways to meet rising energy demand, reports Worldwide Independent Power. Antora Energy and biofuels producer POET have commissioned a 5 GWh thermal energy storage system at POET's Big Stone City facility, with the project expected to become one of the world's largest energy storage installations by capacity when fully operational.

The system stores electricity as heat in solid carbon blocks and delivers around-the-clock thermal energy to industrial processes. According to the companies, the installation will help improve efficiency at the site while supporting increased bioethanol production. The project advanced from initial construction to delivering energy in under 12 months and will be fully operational later this year.
