The evolution of diesel power

EU Stage V legislation is the latest emissions standard for Non-road Mobile Machinery (NRMM) with spark/compression ignition engines. NRMM includes equipment such as generators, lighting towers, pumps etc.

Perkins Stage V solutions cover the full power range for industrial and electric power applications. And with our long history of powering OEM equipment for the rental industry, Perkins is uniquely placed to support rental operators in upgrading to EU Stage V equipment. But while the principal aim of making this transition is to meet the new emissions standard, the benefits for rental operators go far beyond this.

Five reasons for upgrading to Perkins Stage V engines

1. More powerful

Perhaps the most significant benefit of the evolution to Stage V technology is the substantially increased power density it delivers (the amount delivered by a particular engine package size). Our Stage V range improves power density by up to 28% and torque by up to 29% over previous generation equivalents. Much of this improvement is due to advances in the common rail fuel injection system, which supplies fuel to the engine under pressure with electronically controlled precision. This results in an uplift in engine performance just as significant as the reduction in emissions.

2. More economical

Improved operating efficiency doesn’t just mean more power. The common rail system also significantly improves fuel economy. Combined with selective catalytic reduction systems (which reduces the amount of diesel exhaust fluid in the engine), these technologies will significantly reduce fluid consumption across your entire fleet, with markedly lower operating costs as a result. Stage V engines do require some small changes in maintenance procedures. However, the Perkins Distributor network is here for any maintenance support you might need.

3. More efficient

The technologies mentioned so far aren’t entirely new. What is new though is the level of integration and efficiency achieved on this generation of Stage V engines. One prime example of this is diesel particulate filter (DPF) technology. While early DPFs had a reputation for degrading engine efficiency over time, with millions of hours of engineering and testing in real world applications, our DPF technology allows engine efficiency and duty cycles to be maintained. This offers long term economic benefits for rental operators and their customers.

4. More profitable

While the use of Stage V engines is mandatory to meet emission standards in the EU, the Stage V technology package offers significant advantages in power density, fuel efficiency and performance. Simply put, this means that rental operators can downsize their engines without compromising on power, potentially reducing both capital and operating costs and ultimately, boosting their bottom line.

5. More compliant

While Stage V emission standards are currently the world’s most stringent, they are similar to US EPA Tier 4 Final standards. For the rental industry, this means a single machine model can be used in North America, Europe and other locations requiring a Stage V engine. This simplifies the logistics of parts and maintenance supply, the distribution of service employee training and can potentially reduce acquisition costs through larger volume purchases of identical machines. For those wishing to reduce their carbon footprint even further, Perkins engines operate with 100% HVO and biodiesel blends up to B20.
