The series is designed to meet EU Stage IIIA/U.S. EPA Tier 4 Interim as well as the more recent Stage IIIB/Tier 4 Final emission standards.
For ultra-compact power, the 3 cylinder, 1.1 litre 403-11 provides up to 21 kW (28.2 hp) of power from an engine that is ideal for a wide range of small off-highway applications. Its dimensions and ease of installation will enable you to integrate it into even the smallest of machines.
Designed to offer high performance, the 403-11 provides impressive levels of refinement and proven field reliability. A standard 500 hour service interval contributes to low overall cost of ownership. A range of options ensures you have the perfectly tailored model for your applications and markets.
The Perkins 400 Series engine
If you’re looking for additional power, the 3 cylinder 1.7 litre 403-17 model provides up to 30 kW (40.2 hp) from an engine that is ideal for a wide range of small off-highway applications. Its dimensions and ease of installation will help you to integrate it into machinery, with good service access.
Like the 403-11, the 403-17 delivers proven performance, refinement and reliability.

The 3 cylinder 403 EP range provides more power and refinement, while remaining an ultra-compact engine to meet your power generation needs.
Engines range from 0.7-1.5 litre and come in ElectropaK and Electro Unit options. When running at 1500 or 1800 rpm, they provide generating set outputs of 5.7-20 kVA, with some models offering the added flexibility of switching between engine speeds and electrical frequency.
The 403 EP range is a cost effective and reliable performer on prime and standby duties and hits the key power nodes demanded by the power generation industry.
In line with the rest of the 400 Series, the engines give you superb fuel economy, excellent noise attenuation, lightweight power, low emissions and low operating costs. Their compact size guarantees ease of installation in smaller machines.
We worked hard to find a solution when a customer asked us to reduce the low idle speed in their machines while also allowing them to apply full hydraulic load at the lowest idle condition. We delivered this by fitting electronic control to the 400 Series engine.
This not only reduced high and low idle speeds, but because operators could now use their machines at lower speeds, it reduced fuel consumption too.
Traditionally, low-cost diesel engines have mechanical governing, by which the speed of the engine is selected – high to low. The machine applies a load to the flywheel to slow it down and the mechanical governing device introduces fuel to give the torque that balances the load that's applied. The system is entirely mechanical and allows you to select, for example, the engine to maintain 1000 rpm or 2000 rpm.
