Perkins® 5016 engine: the final piece of the Perkins® 5000 Series arrives
Delivering dependable high-output power for data centres and critical infrastructure where uptime matters most.
Perkins has completed its 5000 Series range with the introduction of the new 5016 engine, providing a higher power solution for data centre and critical power applications to complement the power outputs of the existing range. Designed to deliver dependable standby and prime power, the engine strengthens Perkins' ability to support the rapidly growing data centre sector. For generator set manufacturers, the 5016 delivers access to higher power outputs within an established Perkins platform, helping OEMs extend their product offerings into larger and more demanding mission-critical applications.
Boasting a typical electrical output of 1400-2500 kVA, this 16-cylinder engine is fully fuel optimised to deliver efficient fuel consumption at low operating costs. With a typical electrical output of 1750-2250 kVA for prime applications and standby output of 1925-2500 kVA, this engine is fit for use to keep critical applications running with high uptime where it matters.
Meeting the demands of a growing industry
This launch comes as customers seek dependable power solutions capable of supporting a wide range of installations while maintaining the reliability and performance expected from the Perkins brand. With the global expansion of digital infrastructure supporting AI adoption and digital growth, the data centre sector is also seeing an increased demand for dependable power generation.
Poised to support both data centres and critical power applications, including healthcare and airport facilities, the 5016 meets both prime and standby power operating needs with its combination of high output, fuel efficiency and strong load acceptance. The 5016 offering includes models meeting EU Stage II, China Nonroad Stage III and U.S. EPA Tier 2 emissions standards.
As the engine is fuel optimised, it can support larger sites and high demand installations whilst keeping running costs down when in operation regularly or for extended periods in prime applications. It is also able to start quickly and take load reliably to deliver high power in the event of mains supply failure, a key requirement for standby power in environments where downtime isn’t an option.
The 5016 engine uses a unique low-pressure fuel system developed specifically for the 5000 Series that is more tolerant of variations in fuel quality and can run with biodiesel up to B20 based on a 20 percent dilution of biodiesel with standard diesel or on 100 percent hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO).
The 5016 engine is also equipped with an electric fuel priming pump, water in fuel sensor and premium fuel and oil filters to improve serviceability. While the oil and fuel service interval is up to 750 hours or two full years.
While particularly well suited to data centre and critical power installations, the 5016 is an attractive choice for other high-power applications around the world, including projects in rapidly growing markets across Asia where demand for dependable large-engine solutions continues to increase.
Built on proven Perkins® 5000 Series performance
Engineered specifically for the power generation industry, the Perkins® 5016 engine joins the proven power of the Perkins® 5000 Series engines, each optimised for delivering the cost-effective, reliable performance required by data centre and mission-critical applications.
Since the launch of the first 5000 Series engines in 2021, Perkins has steadily expanded the platform with six, eight and 12-cylinder models. The introduction of the 16-cylinder 5016 now completes the range, offering customers and OEMs a fully developed power solution portfolio spanning up to 2500 kVA.
For OEMs, the introduction of the 5016 creates new opportunities at the higher end of the power generation industry. As demand for critical power continues to grow, particularly across data centres and other mission-critical sites, the engine gives generator set manufacturers a dependable platform helping them meet the growing demand for reliable, high-output power while benefiting from the engineering expertise and global support network behind Perkins.
