Disruption to the power supply can leave a seriously bad taste for companies in the food sector, with consequences including costly piles of food waste and missed orders. One firm in Algeria is alleviating that risk by running a robust back-up power solution provided by Tessari Energia and Perkins.
The food industry in Algeria, North Africa, is on an upward trajectory. Thanks to numerous government reforms, including a series of public development programmes, considerable investment has been made in the sector’s equipment and technology as Algeria sets about improving the reputation of home-produced foods.
The country is already savouring strong results from this fresh focus on food. Rural development has been stimulated, more private and foreign investment has been encouraged, and the market is performing more strongly.
As food companies across all sectors look to maximise productivity, so they can meet the demands of growing order books, power failures are becoming increasingly hard to swallow. Any interruption to the main power supply can wreak havoc on refrigeration, processing and packing equipment, resulting in expensive food waste and lost profits.

Any interruption to the main power supply can wreak havoc on refrigeration, processing and packing equipment, resulting in expensive food waste and lost profits.
Faced with these risks, one influential business in the sector took the decision to invest in a dependable on-site standby solution. It approached Tessari Energia for assistance, an Italian business that has been present in the generating set market since 1950.
The company provides complete power solutions from 20 kVA up to 3000 kVA for continuous or standby use, all powered by Perkins engines and coupled to Marelli, Mecc Alte, Linz and Stamford alternators.
For this installation, the company recommended a solution comprising three generator sets – one powered by a Perkins® 2506C-E15TAG2A engine and two fitted with 4016-61TRG3 units. The installation features synchronised control panels to allow individual generator sets to operate in parallel whenever the food firm’s electricity demands require it.
The 15 litre 2506C-E15TAG2A produces up to 687 kVA of instantly accessible standby power, while the 61 litre 4016-61TRG3 units deliver a massive 2500 kVA each. Economic and durable, the engines provide all the power the site needs to keep its essential functions running when the power supply flounders. The company expects the generator sets to perform for up to 500 working hours a year.
With thoroughly dependable standby power now on hand to keep the site operating, production is fully protected. The economic consequences of a power outage have been eliminated and the firm can focus on fulfilling its orders and feeding the growing demand from its customers.
