One of the Middle East’s largest oil businesses can keep its refinery running, even in a total grid shutdown, thanks to a uniquely engineered emergency power solution.
Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) is a prominent energy producer, with interests in exploration, production, storage, refining and distribution – which has also been central to the Emirate’s economic development – recently decided to modernise the process control systems and power system at its refinery and process plant.
A key element of the upgrade was to develop a standby power solution to keep the plant operating during a blackout event. This is when the main supply shuts down and an onsite power system is required to restore operations.
The client, which is one of the region’s largest oil and gas businesses reached out to Precision Industries (PI), a leading manufacturer of diesel generator sets.
Established in 2005 in the UAE, PI serves leading clients in the oil and gas, utility, and infrastructure sectors across the region. It is known for its strong engineering know-how and state-of-the-art manufacturing and quality processes.
Alongside strict performance and reliability requirements, the client’s operational team needed the solution to meet local emission standards and operate at extreme temperatures of up to 58°C.
PI explained that to meet the specific needs of the installation, the generator set had to be highly customised; built to a very high-end specification, meet international standards such as Shell DEP and deliver world-class quality.
To maximise the quality of the final installation, PI selected Perkins as its engine provider. A selling point was Perkins’ application and installation (A&I) support, which sees it collaborate closely with original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to ensure seamless engine integration.
The final solution featured two Perkins® 4008-30TAG2 engines, two 4012-46TAG1A units and one 4012-46TAG3A.
Technical sales manager Bhavin Thakkar said: “We chose Perkins for its engines’ excellent performance at high temperatures and best quality product. Thanks to its A&I team, on this project we were also able to incorporate an aftertreatment system that reduces NOx emissions.”
PI’s collaboration with Perkins has given its oil and gas clients confidence that, even in the event of a black out, power will be restored.
