High performance machines are coming to the Chinese market faster, thanks to close collaboration between two worldclass engineering firms, Perkins and Zongshen Barbieri.
Since 2016, Perkins distributor for south China, Foshan Sime Darby Elco Power Equipment Ltd, has been working with equipment manufacturer Chongqing Zongshen Barbieri to develop innovative new machines that meet emerging demands in the Chinese market.
Chongqing Zongshen Barbieri is a joint venture between China’s Chongqing Zongshen Power Machinery Company and Barbieri SRL from Italy. The partnership brings together the best of Italian technology with the manufacturing expertise and facilities of Chinese partner Zongshen. The company specialises in developing and building agricultural and livestock equipment, including tillers, walking tractors, four-wheel tractors, lawn mowers and snow sweepers.

High praise for ‘mountain king’
One model that symbolises the success of the relationship is the recently launched Zongshen Barbieri ZS554 tractor. The machinery media hailed it as the ‘mountain king’ for its superb maneuverability in extreme terrain. Since its launch, the ZS554 has been certified by the China Agricultural Machinery Validation Centre for sale in China and also by the European Union for export there.
The ZS554 receives premium power from a 2.2 litre Perkins® 404D-22T turbocharged engine. The 4 cylinder unit meets China Stage III emission standards and combines the benefits of high power density with excellent torque to ensure power is delivered promptly and precisely whenever it’s needed. The engine offers excellent fuel tolerance and can cope with diverse fuel qualities. The 500-hour standard service interval and two-year warranty make the engine more competitive than its counterparts.
