Work Experience as an Apprentice

As a first year apprentice, I spent time in many different roles as I was on rotation through a number of departments within Perkins. L also spent time in college completing units on subjects such as machining, welding and electronics. Whilst rotating through different departments, I enjoyed my time working in Maintenance Roles helping to fix problems on the Assembly Tracks and in Machining. I also spent time in the Toolroom using lathes and milling machines to make parts required by the shop floor teams. As part of the programme I also worked in the Quality department, inspecting parts and calibrating gauges. For the rest of my apprenticeship I have chosen to stay in this department and work in the Standards Room.

Work Experience Since Completing my Apprenticeship

I am currently mid-way through my second year and have chosen to study for the NVQ level 3 in Quality. I spend one-day a week at college as well as conducting work placed assessments with the college NVQ assessor here at Perkins. I am working in the Standards Room measuring supplier and in-house components and also calibrating gauges and equipment on highly accurate specialized measuring machines.

Career Prospects

I hope to stay in the Standards Room after completing my apprenticeship and go on to do higher education (HNC/HND). Maybe further in the future once I have gained experience I would like to move into an Engineers role.

Good Things About Perkins

There is a variety of job roles for an apprentice to fill and we are given lots of support (from Perkins and the college). There are many opportunities for an apprentice to move higher within the company. The apprentice wage is very competitive and the shares scheme is a great plan to sign up to.

What Made Me Apply To Perkins ?

After completing two years of A-Levels I wanted to carry on education but get hands on as well.  I attended an open day Perkins which involved a presentation and a tour. I was impressed with the factory and interested in the work being done so I applied.
