Work Experience as an Apprentice

During the first year of my apprenticeship, I worked two days a week

around the site in various work areas divided into the following categories:

 

·         CNC machine maintenance

·         Assembly line maintenance

·         Quality and audit

·         Global engine development

 

I spent the remaining three days at college studying different areas within the subject of engineering.

 

During the second year of my apprenticeship I was placed on the crankshaft line as an apprentice maintenance technician where I completed my maintenance NVQ level 3 portfolio and spent one day a week at college completing my academic studies.

Work Experience Since Completing my Apprenticeship

Since completing my apprenticeship, I have become a permanent maintenance technician on the crankshaft line. This job role involves me working as an integral team member alongside other maintenance technicians in providing support on CNC machine breakdowns, working on continuous improvement projects to improve the efficiency of the line and carrying out complete overhauls on machines, taken out of production during planned stoppages.

Career Prospects

After completing my advanced apprenticeship, I aim to apply for and work towards a HNC in mechanical engineering. From there, it’s my ambition to do an engineering degree and become a chartered engineer within the manufacturing industry.

What Made Me Apply To Perkins?

During school, I knew that I wanted to work within the engineering sector so I applied for the Perkins apprenticeship to embark on my journey into the engineering world. The fact that I could earn and learn at the same time was a persuasive factor but it was the weight of the company’s reputation which justified my application. For me, applying for the technical apprenticeship was the ideal way of getting a foot on the ladder of the engineering industry.
