Every three years the global construction and mining machinery industry makes its way to Munich, Germany, to showcase the latest innovations, debate up-and-coming trends and network with peers. And this year was no exception with over 620,000 visitors from over 200 countries and around 3,700 exhibitors from 63 countries attending bauma 2019.
The show was the perfect opportunity for Perkins to present a dedicated team and new technologies focused on hybrid and electric power solutions that are relevant and adapted to meet the specific needs of construction machines.
Following a significant investment in hybrid engines and electrification research, Perkins showed a range of technologies that will add real value to original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) as they design the next generation of off-highway machines.
The hybrid-electric, hybrid-mechanical and hybrid-hydraulic power technologies complement Perkins existing 0.5–18 litre range of diesel engines, ensuring OEMs and their customers benefit from machines that are more productive, quieter and have lower fuel consumption, whatever power solution they select.
“Through our close technical collaboration with our OEMs and using a vast amount of real-field data, we develop solutions that are truly relevant to the construction sector,” said Matt Coleman, product director at Perkins. “There isn’t one solution that fits all machines. Perkins is establishing itself as an integrator with multiple hybrid and electric power technologies.”
Alongside the hybrids, Perkins showed its EU Stage V engine range designed to meet the new emission standards being phased in from this year for off-highway diesel and mobile electric power engines across the full power range.
Designed with OEMs profitability in mind the Stage V range offers market-leading power density and are quick and simple for OEM’s engineering teams to install, saving time and money.
At Stage V, Perkins offers 14 different platform models from 0.5 litre to 18 litre which deliver power from 8.2–470 kW (11–630 hp). “So whatever construction machine a manufacturer is designing, they can be sure that Perkins has an engine to power it,” said Jaz Gill, Perkins Vice President global sales, marketing, service and parts.
bauma 2019 featured a variety of Perkins-powered machines including Mecalac’s new 6MDX ROPS dumper powered by the Perkins® Syncro 3.6 litre engine, Pramac’s new EU Stage V ready GRW 350 generator set with the 9.3 litre Perkins® 1706J-E93TAG and Kaiser’s S10 and S12 walking excavators fitted with Stage V 1204J engines. Key OEMs including Wacker Neuson, Hidromek, Venieri, Aksa, Teksan and Oyman among many others also showed Perkins-powered equipment.
For the first time, Perkins aftermarket had its own separate stand at bauma 2019. Located in the parts hall, the aftermarket team spent time with Perkins end users, advised on service queries and the importance of using Perkins genuine parts and promoted the benefits of the Perkins® My Engine App. The team also launched a complete range of cost-efficient solutions that ensure an engine’s diesel particulate filter (DPF) stays in perfect working order, including new, new-for-old and remanufactured options. All of these guarantee the DPF will operate to the same factory-fit standards as new regarding power, efficiency, and emissions.
Throughout the week the Perkins team met with the global trade press who were keen to know more about hybrids and electric power solutions, Stage V and our continued investment in aftermarket. Here are a few examples of the videos and articles that we featured in during and after the show.
