The sound of music
Peterborough Cathedral resonated to the sounds of Vivaldi, Wagner and Copland as this year’s 39th Perkins classical concert went ‘green’ in support of the local environment.
This year’s concert formed part of the city’s Green Festival celebrations, which was supported by Perkins and due to popular demand, once again featured the BBC Concert Orchestra.
In keeping with the green theme the programme of works conducted by world renowned Charles Hazlewood and featuring violinist Alexander Sitkovetsky, included Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons, Fenton’s Angel Falls from the film Earth and Vaughan Williams’ Fantasia on Greensleeves.
Around 600 people attended the concert which also included a special presentation to three of Peterborough’s brightest young musicians.
The Perkins Music Awards recognise students who have achieved excellent progress during the year and who are dedicated to music.
Winner of the Perkins Young Musician of the Year Award 2008 was 18 year old Phillipa Knight, a violinist with the Peterborough Youth Orchestra and Peterborough Intermediate String Orchestra.
Phillipa, a previous winner of a Perkins Music Award, received the top prize in recognition of her commitment and dedication to music as well as her aspiration to make music a part of her career.
The recipients of the Perkins Award for Musical Excellence were Felicity Borrell, 18, leader of the Peterborough Youth Orchestra, and Grace Dolan, 11, leader of the Peterborough Junior String Orchestra.
