Engine Noise Refinement

Members of the Noise, Vibration and Harshness (NVH) team at Peterborough have made significant contributions to the development of Perkins products over the years.  The series of .wma files on this page highlight the improvements that have been made from Tier 1 through to the new Tier 3 range of engines.  These sounds were recorded under three different running conditions:-

  • Low Idle - the engine is not subjected to any load, and is running at around 800rpm. This is the equivalent of a car sitting in stationary traffic.
  • "Legislation" Condition - the engine is running at high speed and is generating approximately 25% of the full rated power. This is the equivalent of a car driving at full throttle in second gear.
  • Full Load Rated Speed - the engine is producing maximum power. This is equivalent to a car driving at top speed down the motorway.
